When is a blepharoplasty useful?

  • For heavy or hooded upper eyelids
  • When excess upper-lid skin (dermatochalasis) begins to impair vision
  • For persistent under-eye bags and puffy lower lids
  • For festoons or crepey, redundant lower-lid skin
  • When the gaze appears tired or aged despite feeling rested
  • To improve asymmetry between the two eyes
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) indication — hooded upper lids and under-eye bags

Blepharoplasty in Mexico

Blepharoplasty

A blepharoplasty — or eyelid surgery — removes or repositions excess skin, muscle and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It corrects hooded upper lids and under-eye bags, restoring a rested, alert and more youthful eye. Incisions are hidden in the natural crease of the upper lid or just below the lash line, so the fine scars are very hard to see.

Who is a good candidate?

Adults with heavy or hooded upper lids, excess eyelid skin (dermatochalasis) that may impair the field of vision, or persistent lower-lid bags and puffiness, in good general health and non-smokers. Realistic expectations and healthy eyes are essential.

Expected results

The upper lid is smoother and more open, and lower-lid bags are softened for a rested, alert and youthful eye. Patients often report that their gaze looks 'less tired'. The result is most natural at 2 to 3 months and is long-lasting.

How the Surgery is Done

Blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia with light sedation, or general anaesthesia when combined with other procedures. The surgeon marks the excess skin precisely before beginning, so only what is truly redundant is addressed.

  • Step 1 — upper lid

The incision is placed within the natural upper-lid crease. Redundant skin, a fine strip of muscle when needed, and any bulging fat are removed or refined.

  • Step 2 — lower lid

Through an incision just below the lash line — or hidden inside the lid (transconjunctival) — excess fat is removed or repositioned to smooth under-eye bags. A conservative skin-pinch tightens loose skin when required.

  • Step 3 — closure

Very fine sutures close the incisions along the crease or lash line. Cold compresses are applied to limit swelling.

Incisions & Scars

The approach depends on whether the upper lid, lower lid, or both are treated:

  • 1. Upper-lid crease

The incision follows the natural fold of the upper eyelid, so the healed scar is concealed when the eye is open.

  • 2. Sub-ciliary (below the lashes)

A fine incision just under the lower lash line allows removal of excess skin and fat. It settles into an almost invisible line.

  • 3. Transconjunctival

An incision made entirely inside the lower lid to remove or reposition fat — leaving no external scar at all.

Blepharoplasty Techniques Available

Upper Blepharoplasty

Removes redundant, hooded skin (and a fine strip of muscle or fat when needed) from the upper eyelid through an incision hidden in the natural crease. Opens the eye and refreshes the gaze with no visible scar.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Addresses under-eye bags and puffiness through a fine incision just below the lash line. Excess fat is removed or repositioned and loose skin gently tightened, softening tired-looking lower lids.

Transconjunctival

A scarless approach for the lower lid: the incision is made entirely inside the eyelid to remove or reposition fat. Ideal for younger patients with bags but good skin tone — no external scar.

Skin-Pinch

A conservative technique that removes only a small amount of excess lower-lid skin through a fine sub-ciliary incision. Often combined with the transconjunctival approach for crepey skin without over-tightening.

Blepharoplasty in Mexico — Step by Step

Your Consultation

Free online or in-person consultation. We assess the amount of excess upper-lid skin, the position of the lower-lid fat pockets, skin tone and eye health. We choose the technique (upper, lower, combined or transconjunctival) and design a personalised plan.

Before the Surgery

Pre-operative blood work and medical clearance. Stop smoking 4 weeks before. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatories for 10 days. Arrive in Mexico City 1–2 days before surgery.

The Day of Surgery

The surgeon marks the excess skin precisely. Surgery lasts 1 to 2 hours under local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia if combined. Incisions are hidden in the upper-lid crease or below the lash line, and closed with fine sutures. Most patients go home the same day.

After the Surgery

Cold compresses for the first 48 hours. Daily M.D. home visits at the hotel. Sutures removed around days 5–7. Bruising and swelling settle over 1–2 weeks. Remote follow-up by video call.

Recovery After Blepharoplasty

First 7 days

Mild discomfort, easily controlled. Swelling and bruising around the eyes, plus temporary dry eye or watering. Cold compresses in the first 48 hours. Sleep with the head elevated. Sutures are removed around days 5–7.

Weeks 2 to 4

Most bruising and swelling resolve within 1–2 weeks. Many patients return to desk work in about a week. Avoid straining, heavy lifting and rubbing the eyes. Lingering swelling continues to settle.

Months 1 to 3

Light cardio at 3 weeks; full exercise at 4–6 weeks. Any residual swelling fades and the fine scars pale. By month 2 to 3, the result is essentially final.

Long-term care

Results are long-lasting — upper-lid correction often lasts 10 years or more and lower-lid fat removal rarely recurs. Daily sun protection and good skincare help maintain the youthful, rested appearance.

Risks and Complications

General Surgical Risks

Infection, mild asymmetry and prolonged swelling. All are rare and well managed. Scars are hidden in the lid crease or below the lash line.

Dry Eye & Swelling

Temporary dry eye, watering, swelling and bruising are common in the first days and resolve with lubricating drops and cold compresses. These settle as healing progresses.

Ectropion (Rare)

A rare lower-lid complication in which the lid margin turns slightly outward. Conservative technique and precise skin removal make it uncommon, and it can be corrected if it occurs.

How Argaman Plastic Surgeries Mexico Minimises Risks

Board-certified surgeons, accredited facilities, conservative eyelid technique and daily medical follow-up. Complication rate well below international averages.

Longevity & Maintenance

How long does it last?

Blepharoplasty is long-lasting — upper-lid correction commonly lasts 10 years or more, and lower-lid fat removal often does not recur. The eyes continue to age naturally, but most patients never need a second procedure.

Botox & Blepharoplasty

The two are complementary. Botox softens dynamic lines such as crow's feet, while blepharoplasty removes excess eyelid skin and under-eye bags that Botox cannot address. Periodic Botox can maintain a smooth, rested look after surgery.

Combining Upper & Lower

Many patients have both hooded upper lids and lower-lid bags. Treating the upper and lower eyelids in a single operation gives a balanced, harmonious result and one recovery period — while removing only the truly excess skin and fat.

Revision & Touch-ups

Touch-ups (a minor skin adjustment, fat transfer or filler to the tear trough) are rare and generally not needed for many years.

FAQ about Blepharoplasty
in Mexico

Will blepharoplasty remove dark circles?

Blepharoplasty is designed to correct excess eyelid skin and under-eye bags, not pigmentation. It can soften the shadow cast by puffy lower lids, which improves the appearance of dark circles, but true pigmented dark circles are better addressed with skincare, peels or fillers. Your surgeon will advise the most suitable approach at consultation.

What is the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty removes redundant, hooded skin (and sometimes a strip of muscle or fat) from the upper eyelid to open the eye. Lower blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags and puffiness by removing or repositioning fat and, when needed, tightening loose lower-lid skin. Many patients combine both in a single procedure.

Is blepharoplasty done under local or general anaesthesia?

Most blepharoplasties are performed under local anaesthesia with light sedation, which is comfortable and allows rapid recovery. When combined with other facial procedures, general anaesthesia may be preferred. A certified anesthesiologist is present for every case.

Will the scars be visible after blepharoplasty?

No — upper-eyelid incisions are hidden within the natural crease of the lid, and lower-lid incisions sit just below the lash line or entirely inside the lid (transconjunctival). Once healed, the fine scars are very difficult to see.

How long do the results of blepharoplasty last?

Results are long-lasting — upper blepharoplasty commonly lasts 10 years or more, and lower-lid fat removal often does not recur. The eyes continue to age naturally, but most patients never need a second procedure.

How much does blepharoplasty cost in Mexico City?

Argaman Plastic Surgeries Mexico's all-inclusive blepharoplasty package starts at $2,500 USD. Upper, lower or combined eyelid surgery is quoted after your free consultation.

When can I return to social life after blepharoplasty?

Most bruising and swelling settle within 1 to 2 weeks. Sutures are removed around days 5 to 7 and many patients return to desk work in about a week. Cold compresses in the first days speed recovery.

Is blepharoplasty painful?

No — discomfort is mild. Patients describe tightness, swelling and temporary dry eye rather than pain. Simple analgesics are usually enough for the first day or two.

Who is a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

A good candidate is a healthy adult, usually from their mid-30s onwards, bothered by heavy or hooded upper lids, under-eye bags or crepey lower-lid skin, with realistic expectations and no active eye disease. During your consultation a board-certified surgeon confirms whether the upper, lower or both lids should be treated.

Can blepharoplasty be combined with a facelift or brow lift?

Yes. Because the eyes, brow and midface age together, blepharoplasty is frequently combined with a brow lift or facelift for a balanced, natural result. Performing them in one session means a single anaesthesia and a single recovery. Your surgeon advises the right combination at your consultation.
